Unit Topic

Number Sense: Big Numbers

Description of Unit

Students complete activities that involve reading and writing big numbers.  They learn to write numbers in standard, word, and expanded form.  They also use convenient numbers to estimate products and paper and pencil to multiply.  They begin to learn how to read scientific notation.

Students learn how to compare and order large numbers as well as round large numbers to the specified place value.

Students use base ten pieces to help them understand large numbers and model addition and subtraction with large numbers.

Students learn how to quickly multiply by multiples of 10 and start to learn how to multiply and understand numbers with exponents.

Standard(s)/Benchmarks/Grade Level Expectations Addressed

5.1.1 – Describe whole numbers up to 100,000 using place value structure

5.1.13 – Use multiplication clusters to help build mental math strategies

5.1.14 – Use partial products to explain how multiplication algorithms work

5.1.15 – Use and apply various meanings of multiplication and division

5.1.16 – Develop and use strategies to estimate the results of operations on whole numbers

5.1.19 – Multiply numbers by 10, 1/10th, 100, and 1/100th using mental math

COMMON CORE

·   CC.5.NBT.1 - Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.

·   CC.5.NBT.2 - Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use positive integer exponents to denote powers of 10.

·   CC.5.NBT.5 - Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
